La storia che volevo raccontarti
DI SALVATORE
GIUSEPPE POMARA

There
were no cake or candles to blow out, but it would still have been a very
special day: In fact, it was Pepo’s birthday. At dawn, he was supposed to go
to the Sanctuary of Our Lady Della Pietra with one of his friends. It was the
first time he had permission to get on the train by himself, and he was
waiting anxiously for the next day to come. His mother had prepared pancakes and meatballs that he would have
eaten with the others under the trees around the hermitage. But he
did not take that train and the outing became nothing more than a dream. In
fact, that night, had happened something that distressed his life and made
him become a man ahead of his time. The
mafia of Vallerosa had hit Loisio Ginestra, his father, who had dared to
doubt their supremacy, in a dramatic way. It was their answer to what had
happened at Macchia di lupo. In the years to come, there was no
birthday that Pepo did not remember that failed trip. Loisio
was told before dawn of what had happened, and he rushed to the grounds
where, three hundred meters from the last house, the sheep were kept in their
corral. "Loisio,
Loisio!" Lorena, his wife, woke him up.
